When did you start tutoring?

I started tutoring while studying for my A-Levels, where I first focused on tutoring piano and GCSE science students. After completing my A-Levels, gaining more tutoring experience, and starting my studies at university, I started tutoring virtually. While in University then I have tutored 15 students and accumulated over 100 hours of lessons while also while running GCSE livestreams and crash courses through the holidays.

What do you enjoy doing outside of academia?

Outside of my academic studies and tutoring I also do a lot of music, from the St Catherine's College Oxford Orchestra, to playing sax and piano in multiple bands, and occasionally writing some tunes as well! This coming academic year I’m also taking on the role of President and representative of the St Catz music society which I’m really excited for! In addition I’m a representative for my cohort, collecting feedback and presenting it to termly meetings with the department. I’m a regular gym goer and advocate for lifting some weights for the added skeletal health!

Why do you tutor?

Tutoring is a way to help empower students in many different aspects of their lives. Education is one of the most powerful tools we have as a society, especially when it comes to students making informed decisions about their own actions, careers, and options they’re faced with. Coming from a home-educated with no teachers or tutors to support me, followed by then a state school during college helped show me the value of such targeted education. Many students greatly benefit from having more focused one on one teaching alongside the opportunities to ask more question, and seeing students engage, learn, and grow in lessons has helped consolidate this notion of growth through personalised education.

What do you love about your subject?

Chemistry is the study of matter, and its manipulation is our way of interacting with the world. It’s often overlooked because it’s rarely used in isolation — but that’s what makes it so powerful. At Oxford, I study the importance of chemistry in biology. Understanding how small, unique molecules control what happens in cells all comes down to chemistry. No science works alone — and chemistry’s flexibility makes it one of the most important subjects for solving real-world problems.
