Tell us a bit about yourself

Hi, I’m Charissa! I’m currently studying Biology at Oxford University — and honestly, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. I’ve always been fascinated by the tiny but powerful world inside our cells. Right now, I’m especially interested in membrane trafficking (basically how materials move around inside cells) — it’s mind-blowing how something so small can be so complex and essential to life! Outside of science, I enjoy playing netball, listening to music, and spending time with friends — they’re a great break from studying.

What do you enjoy about tutoring?

Tutoring is something I’ve loved doing for over four years now. During my gap year, I worked full-time in a school teaching GCSE and A-Level Science and Maths, and it really confirmed for me how rewarding this work is. There’s nothing better than seeing a student’s eyes light up when something finally clicks. Being part of that “aha!” moment — helping someone go from confused to confident — is genuinely one of the most fulfilling parts of what I do. I also love how curious students are; you keep me on my toes with your questions, and I enjoy learning alongside you.

What do you love about your subject?

Biology is everywhere — in our bodies, in nature, and in every living thing we interact with. I love how it connects so many aspects of life, from the tiniest molecule to whole ecosystems. It’s such a diverse subject, and it has the power to change lives — especially in fields like medicine, which I’m particularly passionate about. Studying biology feels like uncovering the secrets of life itself, and that never stops being exciting.
